BANYAN ANNOUNCES VINES SNMP AGENT
FOR ENTERPRISE-WIDE NETWORK MANAGEMENT
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 23, 1991 -- Banyan Systems today announced the
Banyan VINES~ Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Agent as a
VINES server option to provide network managers with full
enterprise-wide monitoring capabilities. The VINES SNMP
Agent tracks all components on a VINES network and delivers this
information to any external SNMP management station.
The VINES SNMP Agent's architecture eliminates the need to run
TCP/IP and SNMP software on every server in the network. The SNMP
Agent is only required on a single VINES server in any LAN segment,
From that server, the agent requests information from
the VINES network management option running on other VINES servers
in that section of the network. This proxy agent implementation,
developed by Banyan, provides a cost-effective method of monitoring
LAN hardware, software and communication links across
the enterprise network.
"Banyan's commitment to simplify the use and management of
distributed networks made adding support for SNMP a logical step,"
said James D'Arezzo, Banyan Vice President, Marketing. "Since the
SNMP standard has become the most prevalent management
system in heterogeneous LAN environments, it was the optimum method
for delivering full, enterprise-wide network visibility to Banyan
customers."
A comprehensive view of the enterprise-wide network, its
components, applications and routing is delivered with Banyan's
SNMP solution. The VINES SNMP Agent uses the VINES-specific
management information base (MIB) to define all objects and
functions on the VINES network. This provides the network manager
with continuous monitoring of all server and applications status.
Banyan has also incorporated the standard SNMP functions necessary
for monitoring the TCP/IP protocol implementation and
communication links. The information gathered by the VINES SNMP
Agent can be delivered to any third-party SNMP management station.
The VINES SNMP Agent is designed to reduce system and network
overhead by caching frequently requested or static management data.
This technical innovation has been developed at Banyan as a
cost-saving feature for enterprise-wide networks. Productivity
will be increased when superfluous data is kept from tying up
network bandwidth and server processing power or causing
bottlenecks at network interconnects.
Network security is a primary concern of Banyan customers. In
order to continue to provide strong and comprehensive security on
VINES, Banyan will rely on the existing security features in VINES.
System variables will continue to be controlled in the same
secure manner rather than permitting changes to be made from any
SNMP manager. VINES users will retain complete access control
since all network system variables will be set using only the VINES
security function.
"Hewlett-Packard has worked successfully with Banyan on network
management solutions since Banyan announced the availability of its
MIB in October of 1990," said Duncan Campbell, Hewlett-Packard
Marketing Manager, Colorado Networks Division. "We will
continue to develop and enhance our OpenView management solutions
with Banyan because the client/server approach and support of the
SNMP standard by VINES makes our offerings among the most cost
efficient and flexible in the industry."
"The addition of SNMP support to VINES existing management
facilities sets Banyan's product apart from other network operating
systems, as it provides a comprehensive set of tools to manage a
network," said Roger Dev, Director of Software Development,
Cabletron Systems. "SNMP support in VINES further benefits Banyan
users by allowing them to integrate the power of advanced
enterprise-wide management systems like Cabletron's SPECTRUM into
their present networking environment."
The VINES SNMP Agent is a server-based service running on Intel
80386 and 80486 based server platforms with VINES Version 4.10 and
above. The SNMP option can run concurrently with any other VINES
service. It is available immediately and is priced at
$495. The VINES SNMP MIB is also currently available and is
accessible via Internet.
